Christian Doidge – Euro 2020 or not?

As Wales’ search for a prolific goal-scorer goes on, there is one man who has been quietly doing the business up in Scotland for Hibernian, but not many in Wales know the name Christian Doidge. Not many players make the jump from the Welsh Premier League to the Football League but Doidge is one of them who has and has made an impact.

Having started off his youth career at Southampton, he was released after three years after being told by the south coast club that he wasn’t tall enough to make it as a centre forward, he then tried his luck at Bristol Rovers but was released at the age of 15 in 2008. Doidge started his career in the Welsh system after signing for Welsh Football League Division two side Cwmbran Celtic in 2009, before spells at Croesyceiliog and Barry Town, before eventually signing for WPL side Carmarthen Town in January 2013. In just his second game, Doidge netted for Carmarthen, in his first few months at the club he only scored twice but it was in the 2013/14 season that Doidge made his name among the fans of clubs in the WPL. During that season Doidge scored 17 goals and funnily enough, made a point of being one of the best headers of the ball in the league. During his time at Carmarthen he scored 19 goals in 43 games, in April 2014 he joined Newport County on a week’s trial but no move materialized.
In July 2014, Doidge earned his move to the Football League, joining League Two outfit Dagenham & Redbridge. In a bizarre twist, Dagenham then pulled out of the deal after discovering there was a fee to be paid, initially believing it to be a free transfer, eventually a deal was agreed and in August 2014 Doidge joined them, signing a two-year deal. Doidge struggled with the Daggers after injuries kept him out of the side, playing only 241 minutes of the 2014-15 for Dagenham & Redbridge, having played more during a month’s loan at Dartford. Doidge returned to Dagenham for the 2015/16 season and played regularly appearing in 35 out of 46 league games and scoring 8 goals, ending up as the club’s top goalscorer and winning the the club’s player of the year and the supporters’ player of the year.

After Dagenham & Redbridge were relegated to the National League at the end of the 2015/16 season, Doidge joined Forest Green Rovers in June 2016. It was at Forest Green where Doidge found his goal scoring touch, in his first season he netted 27 times and scored in a 3-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers in the play-off final at Wembley which saw Forest Green reach the Football League. Doidge’s form in front of goal continued during the 2017/18 season as he scored 20 goals for Forest Green as they enjoyed a solid first season in the Football League. Doidge’s exploits in front of goals had gained attention of clubs higher in the Football League pyramid and after starting the 2018/19 season on fire after scoring 4 goals in 5 games and on deadline day earned his move to the Championship.
Doidge signed for Bolton Wanderers on August 31, 2018 with the deal due to be made permanent in January 2019. Unfortunately for Doidge, his time with the Lancashire club was marred by the financial trouble the club after they were placed under a transfer embargo, Doidge however did net once during his troubled spell at The Macron. However that goal came in front of the travelling fans who had made their way to Rotherham. During the January that Doidge was meant to be moving to Bolton permanently, a public dispute between Forest Green and Bolton meant the move was off after Forest Green Chairman, Dale Vince accused Bolton of ”contractual breaches” and with Bolton not having the means of paying Forest Green the agreed £1 million fee, Doidge returned to the League Two club. Doidge played a further 22 games for Forest Green and found the net 10 times after his move to Bolton collapsed.

Following the collapse of his move to Bolton, Doidge stated that he was ”glad” the move fell through after the uncertainty about his future earlier in the year. On the 25th of June, 2019 in perhaps a surprising move, Doidge ventured up north and signed for Hibernian of the Scottish Premiership. Doidge has started life in Edinburgh with a bang after scoring 15 goals in 30 games and now he has caught the eye of Welsh football fans, who are searching for the man who can put the ball in the net. Kieffer Moore is the main man in the eyes of Ryan Giggs at the moment, but with the consistency Doidge is providing, he may well be a worthy option and in many people’s views should be getting a call-up to the squad for the upcoming friendlies against Austria and the USA.

Christian Doidge is a striker in form and has a knack of scoring important goals for Hibernian, Wales are in desperate need of a goalscorer and Doidge could very well be the man to score them. It would also be a coup for the Welsh Football League to see a player who made his name in the WPL reach the Wales squad and possibly Euro 2020. It’s been an interesting ride for him already and there is every possibility that Doidge could be the man that proves all the difference for his country at Euro 2020.

Bangor 1876, 150 goals and counting.

In April 2019, the Supporters Association of Bangor City voted to create a breakaway club in order to protect football in the city, given the recent history of Bangor City under the ownership of VSM. An application was submitted in May 2019, to enter a new club into the Welsh Football league system. A 150 goals later and the Treborth club are still going strong.
In June, it was confirmed that a supporter’s trust was being set up and would immediately start trading after a successful application. Later that same month, the name and crest of the new club was announced, Clwb Pel-Droed Bangor 1876 Football Club. On the 19th of June, 2019 it was announced that Bangor 1876 would be playing in the Gwynedd League, the fifth tier of Welsh Football. The decision was not the most popular with other clubs in the league and the Angelsey League as fans felt it was not fair for the new club to start one tier above the bottom tier.

However the decision stayed the same and wanting to protect football in the city, the fans became the owners. On July 20th, 2019 the club played their first ever game against fellow fan-owned club F.C United of Manchester and the fans in their numbers made the trip to Broadhurst Park. The scoreline on that day wasn’t particularly important, it was the club, players and fans who were important on that day as this was the start of something much bigger. Benn Lundstram scored the first ever goal for the club, a mere consolation after the home side had scored 12 but that didn’t stop the fans in their jubilation in seeing their club net for the first time ever. A few more pre-season games followed with the club winning four games consecutively against higher league opposition.

August 10th saw another pivotal day in the history of Bangor 1876 as the club played their first ever league game in the Gwynedd league. The fans travelled in their droves to nearby Bethesda to take on Ogwen Tigers, in a fiercely contested first stanza without much quality, Bangor 1876 took the lead before being pegged pack by the Tigers, but the quality of Bangor 1876 told in the end and they took the spoils. They played their first home league game 10 days later against Caergybi and this is where the fan-owned club showed their scoring power scoring 10 past the Angelsey side. In a rare competitive game in the league, Nefyn United pushed them all the way before succumbing 3-1 at Treborth. August bank holiday weekend saw the club travel to Llangoed and another commanding victory followed as they won 5-0. The scoring power Bangor 1876 had with players like Les Davies, Jamie Petrie and Dylan Summers-Jones meant the club were always a threat going forward and having the experienced head of Michael Johnston, a man who had won the Welsh Premier League meant they were solid at the back.

A pulsating 4-2 win at Talysarn Celts followed two consecutive cup wins, as the fans again traveled well to Dyffryn Nantlle where the action off the pitch was just as entertaining as it was on it. Doing well in the cup competitions meant the club had a backlog of fixtures but the use of Bangor’s university facilities means the club have floodlights, and the 1876 faithful have already shown how much they love a night under the lights. Judging by the first two games under them, the players absolutley love them as a 12-0 thumping of Llanerchymedd was followed by a 14-0 demolition job of Bethesda Athletic and by October the club had scored 52 league goals. After the 26 goals in two games, two defeats in three cup games followed in the Welsh Cup and FAW Trophy. Although Bangor 1876 bounced back in the league cup as they thumped Llanystumdwy 13-0, after being tested by higher league opposition but most would know that the game against clubs like Ruthin and Llanrwst were significantly better experience for the squad.
December started with a tough game against one of the best sides in the league as 1876 travelled to Trearddur Bay to play against the Bulls, a 2-1 victory followed but it was without doubt the toughest game they had ever faced in the Gwynedd league. 2 consecutive 6-0 wins followed against Caergybi and Llanystumdwy before the club ended 2019 on a high with a 13-2 victory at Treborth over Bontnewydd. January 2020 started in the same vein of form for Bangor 1876 with a 4-0 win over Glantraeth which was followed two days later with another 4-0 success at home to Waunfawr.

Ogwen Tigers were the next to visit Treborth and went home with a 7-0 defeat, before Bangor 1876 travelled to Bethesda, shipping two goals in the process but scoring 10 and continuing their emphatic scoring form. The last game in January saw Bangor travel over the Menai Bridge for a local derby against Menai Bridge Tigers, scoring 5 and their 150th goal in all competitions as they won 5-1. February 1st sees Bangor 1876 travel to Llanystumdwy, and the fans will again be travelling in their numbers which has been the norm in what has been a fantastic 1st season in the history of the club.

Whatever has been said about Bangor 1876, it’s certainly got people talking and been backed by fan ownership and a group of players who love to play for the shirt, the club has made enormous strides in their first ever season in football, and the success for the club will continue. Having won 16 out of 16 in the Gwynedd league, tougher challenges will come as the club climb up the system but to have crowds hitting more than 400 in Wales’ fifth tier is incredible. The club has a fantastic squad with players like Les Davies, Sion Parry, Dylan Summers-Jones, Cameron Barry, Shaun Lock, Jamie Petrie, Michael Johnston and many more, if their first season is anything to go by, the fans and owners will again be supporting their club in the top tiers of Welsh Football.

Greg Draper – The Goal Machine

The New Saints are the best team in the Welsh Premier League, with that there is no doubt after winning the WPL for the last 8 seasons, but a big part of that has been the exploits of goal machine Greg Draper. Having signed for the club in 2011 from English side Basingstoke Town, the New Zealander immediatley hit the ground running in Oswestry. Draper came to the United Kingdom in 2010 after joining Basingstoke from Team Wellington who play in the New Zealand Premiership.

He scored his first league goal for the club in a 1-0 win at Stebonheath Park against Llanelli and his first season amassed a impressive 25 goals in all competitions as The New Saints won the League title and the Welsh Cup. Unfortunately for the New Zealander, the 2012-13 season was plagued by injury and he could only score 5 goals but the club went on to win the league without his significant contribution from the 2011-12 season. The 2013-14 season saw Draper return to form and it was in this season where he introduced himself as a super-sub, Draper played in the Welsh Premier League 26 times with 15 appearances coming off the bench and the New Zealander found the net 16 times in 1120 minutes on the pitch, on average in the WPL he scored every 70 minutes, also he netted twice in 30 minutes of action in the Welsh Cup. By now Draper was one of the most prolific strikers in European football and had a knack of making an impact off the bench.

His goal-scoring exploits continued into the 2014-15 season as he scored 17 goals and The New Saints retained their league crown, Draper continuing his prolific form with a goal every 88 minutes. Draper’s goals helped the club won a notable domestic treble as The New Saints won both cup competitions to go with their league title. The 2015-16 season saw Draper only playing 27 games in all competitions due to injury. In that season Draper scored 18 goals, all of those goals coming in only eight different games, what was more impressive in that season was his knack of scoring more than once in a game, in the eight games he netted, he scored more than once in six of them which included five in one game in the Welsh League Cup against Holywell. The 2016-17 season was a season of stability for Draper has he escaped his injury troubles and played in 39 games which also included The Scottish Challenge Cup after The New Saints were invited as champions of Wales, for Draper this was just another opportunity to add to his personal goal tally.

In that 2016-17 season, Draper netted 22 times in all competitions, not maintaining the same goal ratio as previous seasons but Draper would have been happier in getting on the pitch more often but the striker still netted every 106 minutes which by anyone’s standards is impressive. In his first Scottish Challenge Cup game Draper scored a hat-trick against Forfar Athletic as The New Saints won 3-1, and also netted three times as The New Saints smashed Rhyl by 10 goals to nil in the league as the club continued their dominance on the Welsh Premier League. The 2016-17 season also saw The New Saints win a world record 27 consecutive games. The 2017-18 season saw Draper maintain his goal-scoring form with 26 goals in all competitions which saw him score 4 in a league game for the second time in his New Saints career against Cefn Druids. He maintained his amazing goal ratio for the seventh season in a row, finding the net on average every 99 minutes as The New Saints again secured the league title along with qualification to the qualifying rounds of the Champions League and the Welsh League Cup.

It was the 2018-19 season that saw Draper hit international headlines, he spent more time on the bench than he did on the pitch predominantly being used as an impact player, but still won the Welsh Premier League’s golden boot after scoring 27 goals but only played 1,032 minutes of a possible 2,880 meaning he scored a league goal on average every 38 minutes. In all competitions he scored a fantastic 35 goals which included a 5 goal haul in a 8-1 demolition job of Llandudno in the quarter final of the Welsh Cup. It was no surprise that The New Saints again won the league and added the Welsh Cup to their trophy cabinet, but having a goal-scorer as prolific as the New Zealander usually means you will be challenging or winning major honours. Greg Draper has begun the 2019-20 in the same form he usually starts a season and has scored 18 goals in 21 league games which has included two hat-tricks and a four goal haul against Airbus UK.

In his The New Saints career, Draper has collected an unbelievable 186 goals in 279 games for the Oswestry based, even though the Welsh Premier League is not noted as being a competitive one, to maintain a record like Draper’s is tough to do in any competition. His knack of coming off the bench to score vital goals is a quality every striker would want, I’m sure that he has been offered opportunities elsewhere but as a fan of WPL, seeing someone like Draper in his prime of scoring goals does not come often and the WPL is better for having his quality in it.

The 2010-11 WPL – The Bangor City season

The Welsh Premier League has been recently dominated by The New Saints with the club winning the title every season since the 2011/12 season. But in the 2010/11 their run was halted by a fantastic Bangor City side. Having seen the league reduced from 18 teams to 12, the season was truly the best of what Wales had to offer, with the exception of former champions Rhyl who were relegated due to being unable to gain a sufficient license.
Manager Neville Powell had amassed a squad with a good mix of youth and a few local lads. Players such as Dave Morley, Marc Limbert, James Brewerton and Paul Smith were going to be integral to the title win, while Sion Edwards, Chris Jones and Les Davies were producing the goals that would see them win their first 15 games in a row before clinching the title with a fantastic victory over The New Saints in their final full season at Farrar Road.

Their season started with an Europa League tie against Finnish side Honka Espoo, over the two legs Bangor came out as 3-2 winners which saw them awarded a tie with significantly tougher Portuguese side Maritimo, unfortunately Bangor lost 10-3 on aggregate. The league season started with a 2-1 over Neath, at Farrar Road before a 3-2 win over Bala Town the following week meaning the Citizens had 6 points from 6. Notable wins in the perfect 15 games saw a pulsating 4-3 win over The New Saints, which gave the fans belief that title could be coming back to Bangor.

A 8-1 home win in early December over Port Talbot Town, which saw the prolific Jamie Reed net five goals meant Bangor had put a real marker down in their challenge for their title and it looked like they could keep it going for the duration of the season. The first dropped points came in early January in the busy festive period, after a 4-2 defeat to Prestatyn Town. Three days after the defeat to Prestatyn, Bangor suffered another defeat after goals from Rhys Griffiths and Chris Llewellyn saw them go down 2-0 to Llanelli. Bangor came back with a bang after two defeats with a 6-0 win over basement boys Haverfordwest with Les Davies netting a brace. A 2-2 draw with The New Saints in mid January saw Bangor keep the gap at the top to six points. A 2-1 win at Bastion Gardens in February saw Bangor keep The New Saints at bay in the title race, before a 2-1 defeat at Farrar Road to Neath in early March saw Bangor drop valuable points.

After the defeat to Neath, Bangor went through a significant slump in form which saw them go winless for six games which included a 5-2 thrashing at Farrar Road by the hands of Llanelli. With only a few games to go, it was desperate time for Bangor as by now The New Saints had overtaken them to go top, with only three games to go. With the side from Oswestry visiting Farrar Road in the last game of the season, Bangor knew they had to win the last three. The run started with a 2-1 at Port Talbot during the Easter period before another 2-1 away win at Neath two days later saw them going into the final game one point behind The New Saints.

In front of a bumper crowd at Farrar Road, Bangor came into the game fired up knowing the size of the task in front of them, knowing it would be poetic to lift the title in front of the Farrar Road faithful in the last full season in the centre of the city. The game itself was a cagey affair with no team wanting to make the game changing mistake but in the 68th minute Craig Garside came up with the game changing moment as his goal sent the Farrar Road crowd into pandemonium. The citizens held out for the victory and the title was theirs, after a pulsating season which saw them take 45 points in their first 15 games, a mid season slump saw them only take 25 from the next 17 games but it was the last three wins on the bounce that saw them overtake The New Saints on the last day and win the Welsh Premier League and truly tell the character of the Farrar Road side.

Sadly Bangor City have not been able to replicate that title win and today sit in the JD Cymru North, having saw a troubled ownership under VSM and unable to gain a Welsh Premier League license after finishing second in the league after financial irregularites saw the FAW demote them. With the inception of Bangor 1876 following a decision from the supporters association, which saw fans wanting to protect football in the city, numbers at Nantporth have dwindled and many of the Farrar Road faithful now will be found at Treborth supporting the phoenix club. Whatever the situation at Bangor City, anyone associated with the club during that season will see it as one of the best in the club’s history, and gave the last full season at Farrar Road the send-off it deserved.

Colwyn Bay F.C. – From Wales to England and back again

In their first season since returning to the Welsh Football pyramid, Colwyn Bay are one of the best known clubs in Wales. But they are probably more known for their football in the English system. Having been a bit of a yo-yo club in switching between the Welsh and English footballing systems, their return to the JD Cymru North league was a welcome return for North Wales football and for Welsh Football in general.

The club was formed in 1881 and joined the North Wales Coast League in 1898 but a couple of years later were forced to withdraw from that very league due to the fact they had no ground to play at. However they returned the next season, in 1907 the club became known as Colwyn Bay United and after the North Wales Coast League folded in 1921, they joined the Welsh National League. Having had minor cup success , the Welsh National League folded by the end of the 1929-30 season, subsequently Colwyn Bay were founder members of the North Wales Football Combination, in which they won the league in the first season. The club’s first jaunt outside of the Welsh Football system came in 1935 as they joined the Birmingham and District League, but they struggled in this league but finished bottom in 1935-36 and 1936-37, and they switched back to the now defunct Welsh League (North).

In the first season following the Second World War, Colwyn Bay finished runners-up in the Welsh League (North), following a period of no success, the club came back to prominence in the early 1960’s, they were runners-up in 1963-64 during this season a crowd of 5,000 saw them play local rivals Borough United at Eirias Park. The following season they won the league, however after this title success, another dry period came with the club not really gaining any success. In the early 1980’s the club had another period of success in the Welsh League (North) as they were crowned champions in 1980-81. In the 1982-83 season, the club won the league and reached the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup but lost 4-0 on aggregate to Swansea City. The following season the club left Eirias Park to play at Llaneilian Park where they still play today, they retained their league title, but after this success the club announced they were rejoining the English Football League system.
The club joined the third Division of the North West Counties League, a runners-up spot in their first season secured promotion to the second Divison, and in 1986-87 they were promoted to division one. In their first season in Division one, the club reached the first round of the F.A. Cup for the first time but lost narrowly by a goal to nil to Northwich Victoria. Cup success followed in 1988-89 as they won the League Cup with a 3-0 triumph over Warrington Town in the final which was played at Gigg Lane. They finished runners-up in the Premier Division of the North West Counties League in 1990-91, they were promoted to Division One of the Northern Premier League, after a spot came available after South Liverpool folded. They won the league at the first attempt and were promoted to the Premier Division. The season also saw cup success after they won the North Wales Coast Challenge Cup, but were defeated in the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup after losing to Hednesford Town.

A public dispute with the FAW at the end of the 1991-92, which saw Colwyn Bay being ordered to join the newly-formed League of Wales or cease playing in Wales. After refusing the FAW’s demands, the club began the season at Drill Field in Northwich before moving to play at the Ellesmere Port Stadium. A court injunction allowed the club to come back to their rightful home in 1994, before they won the case in the High Court of Justice in April 1995. In 1995-96, a good run through the qualifying rounds of the F.A. Cup saw the club again reach the first round where they beat Spennymoor United but lost to Blackpool in the second. The following season, saw a North Wales derby in the first round of the F.A. Cup but the Bay lost 2-0 to Wrexham in a replay. After several seasons of solid displays, in 2002-03 the club were relegated to Division one of the Northern Premier League. The club finished fifth in the 2006-07 season which was a play-off berth but were beaten by Cammell Laird.

League restructuring saw the club placed in the Southern division for the 2007-08 season but were switched back to North the following season. In their first season back in Division One North , the club again reached the play-offs but lost on penalties to Newcastle Blue Star. The next season again saw them keep up consistent run of reaching the play-offs, but in a change to previous seasons, they beat Curzon Ashton in the semi-finals. A final against Lancaster City followed and the Bay won 1-0 and gained promotion back to the Premier Division.
A storming season in the Premier Division saw newly promoted Colwyn Bay finish runners-up, which saw them again in them familiar play-offs. The semi-finals saw them beat North Ferriby United and in the final they beat FC United of Manchester to earn promotion to the Conference North, their highest ever position in the English system. After four seasons in the Conference North the club were relegated back to the Northern Premier League’s Premier Division, another relegation followed and by the 2016-17 season they were again in Northern Premier League’s Division One. Rumours started about the club’s return to the Welsh Football system as travelling costs and sustainability costs saw the club contemplate coming back to play in Wales for the first time since 1984.

In March, 2019 the club confirmed they would be returning to the Welsh Football system and the FAW integrated the club into the second tier where a number of local derbies would be awaiting them against sides such as Rhyl, Llandudno and Prestatyn Town. The club have started life back in Wales fantastically well with manager Craig Hogg saying the club are enjoying life in the JD Cymru North. The club’s policy of signing local players and trusting youth has been well supported by the fans. The club currently sit fifth in the JD Cymru North having won 10 of their 20 games with 5 draws and 5 defeats, a notable league victory was a 3-0 success at Rhyl. The club also saw off JD Cymru Premier side Airbus UK in the third round of the Welsh Cup after a fantastic effort from Tom McCready. Their return to the Welsh leagues has been a welcomed one and North Wales football is much healthier for having a club with the infrastructure and size of Colwyn Bay.

Kieffer Moore – From Truro to Viking to Euro 2020

When Wales’ Euro 2020 qualifying campaign was on the verge of collapsing, up stepped Kieffer Roberto Francisco Moore, a 6ft 5in striker who started his career with Truro City and in 2015 had been playing in the Eliteserien in Norway for Viking Stavanger. A Barnsley player at the time of his first call-up for the Welsh national time, Moore qualified through his maternal grandfather and boy, Wales were lucky that he did.
Kieffer Moore began his career in the Conference South league, with Truro City signing in 2012 as a 19 year old, and was described by their manager Lee Hodges as the club’s most important player due to his eye for goal. After 13 goals in 22 apperances for the Cornish side, Moore decided to seek out a new club and in February 2013 moved to Dorchester Rovers, while an injury had restricted him from making an impact with his new club, he ended the season with 20 goals in 35 apperances for Truro and Dorchester. While plying his trade in the Conference South, Moore combined his dream of becoming a footballer with jobs as a personal trainer and lifeguard. However things were about to change for the striker.

In June 2013, Moore went on trial with then Championship side Yeovil Town, and after impressing during his month trial, Yeovil agreed to sign him from Dorchester, a massive jump of four tiers in the English system.
During his time at Yeovil Town, Moore was in and out of the side as a result of inury and struggling to adapt to the level of the Championship, Yeovil were relegated to League One at the end of the 2013-14 season and after second consecutive relegation in the 2014-15 season, Moore was released by Yeovil and left without a club. In August 2015, Moore seeked out pastures new and agreed a one year deal with Norwegian side Viking, during his time in Norway, Moore struggled to adapt to life in different conditions and by Christmas, Viking had placed him on the transfer list, having left Norway, Moore came back to England and had trials with Exeter City and Leyton Orient. On January 18, 2016 Moore signed for Forest Green Rovers, and made his debut as a central defender but after seeing his qualities as a target man, the manager soon moved him back to his prefered position as a forward. Moore helped Forest Green reach the play-off final for a place in the Football League but unfortunately he was denied the chance to play in the final against Grimsby Town as he ruptured his appendix after the semi-final win over Dover Athletic. In January 2017, Moore again had a chance of Championship football as he signed for Ipswich Town for £10,000 after impressing during a loan spell at Torquay United.

Unfortunately Moore again failed to deliver at Championship level, playing 11 times for Ipswich but failing to find the net, in July 2017 he was loaned to League One side Rotherham United, it was with the Yorkshire club that found form, he scored a hat-trick on his home debut and by October was the league’s top scorer with 11 goals. The goals dried up but he did score a 96th minute equaliser against local rivals Doncaster Rovers and ended up with 13 goals in 22 apperances after his season was cut short due to injury. In January 2018, Moore signed a permanent deal with another Yorkshire side in Barnsley. It was in the 2018/19 season that Moore grabbed the headlines and put him in consideration for international football, he scored 17 goals in 31 matches and was named in the PFA Team of the Year for League One as his performances helped Barnsley gain promotion to the Championship. He was invited to a Wales training squad in May 2018 after frantic searches for his grandfather’s birth certificate to prove that he had some Welsh heritage and thus qualified to play for the National team.

In the summer of 2019, Moore was again on his travels as he left Yorkshire for Lancashire as he agreed a three-year deal with Championship side Wigan Athletic. Not a prolific goal-scorer with Wigan, it was his performances as a target man that caught the eye of Ryan Giggs, and it was exactly what Wales needed, a forward who could bully defenders and be a nuisance all game long. After his debut against Belarus in a friendly, it was during the remaining Euro 2020 qualifiers where Moore made an instant impact and became a hero of the Welsh public. He scored his first international goal in a crucial qualifier in Trnava against in Slovakia and went on in November to score the opening goal in a 2-0 victory over Azerbaijan in Baku.

As a forward he doesn’t have the flair of Craig Bellamy or Robert Earnshaw or is not as mobile as other big men such as John Hartson, but when Wales needed a different tactic and a presence up front, the big man from Torquay stepped up and made a difference in getting Wales into Euro 2020. Even when Aaron Ramsey scored a header against Hungary, the crowd at the far side of The Cardiff City Stadium thought it was Moore, such was his impact as a target man, he’s an outlet from defence and he will run after every cause and in such a short amount of time has become an intergral part of Ryan Giggs side and will be a shoe-in to star at Euro 2020.
